Socratic Seminars

Hi everyone,

We've been having amazing Socratic Seminars!  I love to hear your thinking on a range of topics.  I hope you are all enjoying To Kill A Mockingbird. I am enjoying re-reading it with you.  

Keep in mind that next Wednesday we will have our final test on the novel.  Next week we will also watch the film in class.  We will analyze it to see how it differs from the novel.

Please keep in mind that you can always make up any of your missing work.  Just come to see me to talk over what you need to do.  

Homework Alert: Tom Robinson profile is due tomorrow for Regents students.  Honors students were expected to respond to the questions posted on this website.

To Kill A Mockingbird: Question #3

Consider the following quote:

"Grandma's a wonderful cook," said Francis. "She's gonna teach me how." "Boys don't cook." I giggled at the thought of Jem in an apron. "Grandma says all men should learn to cook, that men ought be careful with their wives and wait on 'em when they don't feel good," said my cousin. "I don't want Dill waiting' on me," I said. "I'd rather wait on him." "Dill?" "Yeah. Don't say anything about it yet, but we're gonna get married as soon as we're big enough. He asked me last summer" (Lee 82).

Francis seems to get some of his ideas about being a man from his grandmother. Scout has ideas about being a wife despite the fact that she has no mother as a role model. Where do you think we get our ideas about how to act as a man or a woman?

 

To Kill A Mockingbird: Question #2

"Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn't supposed to be doing things that required pants. Aunt Alexandra's vision of my deportment involved playing with small stoves, tea sets, and wearing the Add-A-Pearl necklace she gave me when I was born; furthermore, I should be a ray of sunshine in my father's lonely life" (Lee 81).

Aunt Alexandra seems to want Scout to grow out of her tomboy personality & style. Do you think it is acceptable for teenage girls to be tomboys? How do you think the Scout's family will react if she does not grow out of this stage?

 

To Kill A Mockingbird: Question #1

While in the courthouse, Dill starts to cry. Here is a quote from the text, when Scout and Dill meet up with Mr. Raymond:

"He jerked his head at Dill: 'Things haven't caught up with that one's instinct yet. Let him get a little older and he won't get sick and cry. Maybe things'll strike him as being -- not quite right, say, but he won't cry, not when he gets a few years on him.' 'Cry about what, Mr. Raymond?' Dill's maleness was beginning to assert itself. 'Cry about the simple hell people give other people -- without even thinking." (p. 201)

Why do you think the narrator (Scout) says that Dill's "maleness was beginning to assert itself"?
