Download Frankenstein - Monsters!
Many of you have already expressed interest in the next book we are going to read. It is about a man who puts together a bunch of old body parts to create a new man. Ugh! The creature he creates turns out to be more monster than man and destruction follows this poorly thought-out experiment. So, why are we still reading this story almost 200 years after it was first published? Moreover, why are monsters everywhere in our culture? Children are introduced to monsters at an early age (think Cookie Monster, Telly Monster, and Oscar the Grouch, and all of those monsters in Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are). Twilight, one of the most popular series of books in the last few years concerns a Vampire, which is a type of monster. Even adults are thrilled by the notion of monsters, in such horror movies as Silence of the Lambs, Scream and Friday the Thirteenth. So, why do you think monsters are so prevalent in our culture? Here are a few suggestions as to why.
